18th Century Petticoat

A skirt made in the style of an 18th century petticoat, with the back fastening at the front and the front fastening at the back.

This has been made out of checked linen, with knife pleating used to create fullness. The pleats meet at the centre front and centre back to form box pleats.

Tie fastenings are used, with side slits that would allow access to tie on pockets, typical of the era.

The petticoat is dressed over a small bum roll on the mannequin to give historically authentic shaping.

Bum Roll

A large bum roll made from calico with cotton tape tie fastening and filled with wadding.

This style and size would be typical of the 16th-18th centuries in women’s fashionable dress.

Although just displayed on the mannequin, this would be worn over a corset, beneath the petticoats.

Tudor Hood

A Tudor Hood made with a buckram base, and velvet covering. Decorated with lace and beading and secured with a ribbon tie fastening.
